Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 has failed to hit the triple-digit mark.

Has Marvel lost its shine here at the Nigerian box office?

Tell Me More

The title launched at the Nigerian box office on the 5th of May, 2023 in 64 locations across the country. The superhero flick is based on the Marvel Comics superhero team, Guardians of the Galaxy. It is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 is the final instalment in the Guardian of the Galaxy film trilogy. It is the 32nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Following its debut, the movie made a weekend opening of N28 million and N40.56 million after its first week. In ten days, it has made a sum of N60.59 million.

The film is currently in the No. 1 position at the Nigerian box office, ahead of The Bride Price, Honey Money, John Wick 4, and The Kujus Again.

Written and directed by James Gunn, the $250M studio title features Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Will Poulter, Zoe Saldana, Sean Gunn, Karen Gilan, Chukwudi Iwuji, and others.

Tangent

In 2023, various international titles were launched with impressive opening figures. Three such titles include Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Creed III, and John Wick 3.

Launched on the 17th of February, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had a weekend opening of N39.66 million and a seven-day opening of N58.28 million. The film was written by Jeff Loveness and directed by Peyton Reed. It is also a superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the characters Scott Lang (Ant-Man) and Hope Pym (Wasp).

On the 3rd of March, Creed III debuted at the Nigerian box office with a 3-day opening figure of N27.67 million and N46.91 million weekly gross. The sports drama was written by Keenan Coogler and Zach Baylin and directed by Michael B. Jordan.

Similarly, John Wick: Chapter 4, an action thriller film written by Shay Hatten and directed by Chad Stahelski, debuted on the 24th of March and has a weekend opening of N79.94 million and N114.87 million weekly earnings.

Last year, when Doctor Strange in The Multiverse Madness was released, it opened with strange numbers. It was released about the same time as Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3. In its first weekend, the title made N127.28 million and N171.46 million in one week.

Though Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 opened with N40.56 million in its first week, it can still be categorized as one of the top earners this year. However, this doesn’t meet the numbers expected for Marvel Studios.

Key Background

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 premiered at Disneyland Paris on the 22nd of April, 2023, and was released globally on the 5th of May, 2023. It’s the sequel to Guardians of The Galaxy (2014) and Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017).

Guardians of The Galaxy (2014) grossed $773.3 million globally, while Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) made $869 million. In the ten days following its release, Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 has crossed the $500 million bar with $530.9 million earned globally.

According to Gunn in November 2014, the movie’s writer and director, he had nursed the ideas for a third film of which he announced his return to write and direct in April 2017. However, he was fired from the work in July 2018 by Disney due to some controversial posts on Twitter. This decision was later reversed by the company in October and Gunn was reinstated. He was publicly revealed in March 2019 after he finished work on the projects he was working on at the time.

Principal photography for Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 began in November 2021 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. It lasted till May 2022.

Summary

With Fast X, it is very much likely that GOTG 3 might not even make the N200M but fingers crossed its numbers stay steady as we keep on tracking.
