The Story⚡
Nicholas Weinstock, the Emmy-nominated producer behind Apple TV+’s Severance, is producing the sequel to Editi Effiong’s 2023 Nigerian action thriller The Black Book, titled The Black Book 2 – Old Scores.

Tell Me More
The original The Black Book, made on a $1 million budget, reached No. 3 on Netflix’s global charts in 2023, appeared in the top 10 in over 69 countries, and accumulated more than 20 million views worldwide. It follows Paul Edima (Richard Mofe-Damijo), a former hitman turned deacon, who seeks revenge after corrupt police frame and kill his son.
Weinstock’s Invention Studios is partnering with Effiong’s Anakle Films to produce the sequel, with Effiong returning as writer and director. The story continues directly from the first film, with Paul Edima further confronting the corrupt system. The official description notes that the film will explore themes of justice, redemption, and societal unrest in contemporary Nigeria.

“The Black Book showed us that local stories can spark global conversations,” Effiong said in a statement. “With Old Scores, we’re not just continuing a story, we’re continuing a movement — one that affirms the power of African voices to shape cinema worldwide.”
Weinstock added: “What Editi’s created with The Black Book is unique in its power: not just a great action film but a film franchise of extraordinary skill, ambition, and worldwide commercial appeal. It’s a phenomenal time for African and international creators to be delivering work at the quality level of traditional Hollywood and actually beyond – and to be stunning global audiences with sheer imagination and excellence. And there’s no better example of that than Old Scores and its game-changing potential.”

Weinstock’s recent credits include the June Squibb action-comedy Thelma (2024), Queenpins (2021), Dinner in America (2020), and the Emmy-nominated Showtime series Escape at Dannemora. He is also one of the producers of Severance, which has received 53 Emmy nominations.
This is not Weinstock’s first Nigerian project; he is also producing Clarissa, a modern adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway set in Nigeria, starring Sophie Okonedo, David Oyelowo, and Ayo Edebiri, recently acquired by Neon for U.S. distribution.
Tangent
Netflix has largely stopped commissioning and funding new Nigerian films since late 2024 due to lower returns, piracy, and market challenges, though it still licenses some content.
No distribution is confirmed yet for The Black Book 2. The first film went straight to Netflix, but with the sequel’s higher profile and Weinstock’s involvement, possibilities include a theatrical release in Nigeria (and possibly internationally) to build buzz and revenue first, followed by a streaming deal, potentially with Netflix acquiring it after production, another platform, or a hybrid model.
Filming wrapped in late 2025, and the film is now in post-production, but no release date or platform has been announced so far.

In Summary
The Black Book became a global Netflix hit on a $1 million budget. Its sequel reunites the original team with added international producing strength from Nicky Weinstock of Severance, and continues telling powerful Nigerian stories about corruption, justice, and redemption with even wider global reach in mind.
