The Story

How well can this faith-based picture, What About Us compete on the Nigerian big screen

Tell Me More

Nigerian preacher Apostle Emmanuel Iren, following in the footsteps of his wife Laju Iren, a filmmaker, has ventured into the world of cinema with his debut movie, What About Us.

The film tells the story of a Christian couple struggling to maintain their marriage as their relationship becomes strained when a new neighbour couple moves in next door.

The movie features an impressive cast, including Kunle Remi, Uzor Arukwe, Folu Storms, Teniola Aladese, Seyi Awolowo, and Atlanta Bridget Johnson. Apostle Iren serves as the executive producer, with Kayode Kasum directing, Bisola Badejo producing, and Yemi Adeojo as the director of photography.

Key Background

Emmanuel Iren, is a Nigerian preacher, gospel singer, and songwriter. He founded Celebration Church International (CCI), headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria which has expanded into branches that include PH City, Ile Ife, Ibadan, Canada and the UK.

In 2018, he debuted his first album, Kerygma, and in 2022, he released his second album, Apostolos: Voice of Transition.

The release of the What About Us movie trailer sparked a heated debate on the role of mainstream actors in faith-based films. Critics argue that similar to Mount Zion Films, faith-based movies should feature Christian actors whose lifestyles reflect the values they portray on screen.

They contend that as pastors and gospel musicians minister through their respective mediums, gospel actors also minister to audiences through their performances. Supporters believe that an actor’s faith should align with the spiritual messages they convey, emphasizing that many people are drawn to faith not just through songs or sermons, but through the impactful narratives of faith-based films.
