The Story⚡
When the youngest of four wives fails to conceive, a carefully ordered household begins to unravel in the film The Secret Lives Of Baba Segi’s Wives, hitting the cinemas on December 4, 2026.
Tell Me More
Baba Segi’s household has always operated on a precise balance of power, affection, and silence. Four wives. Seven children. A man who believes he rules his home with absolute certainty. That certainty starts to fracture the moment Bolanle, the educated newcomer, fails to conceive. What begins as a private medical concern quickly exposes deeper currents of rivalry, loyalty, and long-buried truths that have held the family together for years.
Adapted from Lola Shoneyin’s acclaimed 2010 novel, the film is directed by Daniel Oriahi and produced by EbonyLife Films in partnership with Genesis, Nile, and Silverbird. It brings one of the most discussed stories in contemporary Nigerian literature to the big screen. The cast is led by Odunlade Adekola as the proud yet vulnerable patriarch, with Iyabo Ojo, Mercy Aigbe, Bimbo Ademoye, and Omowunmi Dada portraying the four wives whose private lives and quiet strategies shape every corner of the compound.

At its centre sits a simple, devastating question: what happens when the roles assigned by tradition no longer fit the people forced to play them? Infertility becomes the catalyst that forces every member of the household to confront questions of inheritance, gender, and control. The drama moves between sharp domestic exchanges and moments of unexpected tenderness, never losing sight of the human cost of maintaining appearances. Baba Segi’s authority, once unchallenged, is tested not by open rebellion but by the slow revelation of secrets the women have kept in plain sight.
The film’s tone blends the observational humour familiar to Nollywood audiences with a quieter emotional precision. It resists easy villains or heroes. Instead, it watches carefully as power shifts within a single home and the cost of silence becomes impossible to ignore. Viewers who know the novel will recognise the carefully drawn relationships and the moral complexity that made the book endure. Those coming to the story for the first time will find a family drama that feels both specific to its Ibadan setting and universal in its exploration of what people will protect in the name of survival.
