Nollywood icon Sola Sobowale alongside Kunle Remi, and Bimbo Ademoye make a triumphant return to the Anikulapo franchise, joining an impressive ensemble cast in Netflix’s highly anticipated series, “Anikulapo: Rise Of The Spectre,” directed and produced by Kunle Afolayan.

Serving as a follow-up to the successful 2022 title “Anikulapo,” the captivating six-part epic series unfolds as Saro, racing against time to avert a dire fate, returns to the Oyo Kingdom with a near-impossible mission.

Scheduled for a global and exclusive release on Netflix on March 1, 2024, “Anikulapo: Rise of The Spectre” invites viewers worldwide to reimmerse themselves in the fascinating world of Saro and Arolake.

Filmed at the picturesque KAP Film Village and Resort in Igbojaiye, Oyo State, Nigeria, the series features the return of fan favourites Kunle Remi as Saro and Bimbo Ademoye as Rolake.

This dynamic duo is joined by a stellar cast, including Nollywood veterans like Sola Sobowale, Jide Kosoko, Lincoln Owo Ogunde, Taiwo Hassan, Gabriel Afolayan, Adewale Elesho, Uzee Usman, Lateef Adedimeji and a host of others

 

Netflix 2024 Original Series Slates

In addition to the Anikulapo series, Netflix is set to unveil two more Nigerian titles: the Oloture series and How To Kill a Monkey

Oloture (Series)

EbonyLife Studios, following the success of the 2019 hit film “Oloture,” presents a multi-episode series that serves as a sequel, continuing the gripping narrative of the titular character.

The story follows Òlòtūré, an undercover journalist, as she navigates through Niger, Libya, and the Mediterranean, grappling with the challenges of her perilous assignment.

Director Kenneth Gyang returns to helm the series, bringing back a stellar cast that includes Sharon Ooja, Omoni Oboli, Beverly Osu, Ikechukwu Onunaku, Stan Nze, Amarachukwu Ono, Bukola Oladipupo, Daniel Etim Effiong, and Patrick Doyle. As Òlòtūré embarks on her treacherous journey, the series delves into the complexities of human trafficking and the relentless pursuit of truth in the face of danger.

To Kill A Monkey

Scheduled for release in 2024, Kemi Adetiba’s highly anticipated crime thriller series, “To Kill A Monkey,” is confirmed to star William Benson and Bucci Franklin in leading roles, accompanied by a talented supporting cast featuring Bimbo Akintola, Chidi Mokeme, Dami Adegbite, and Ireti Doyle.

The series’ production has recently wrapped, and additional details about the storyline and cast will be revealed in due course. The crime thriller is among other branded African titles set to premiere on the streaming service in 2024.

Kemi Adetiba serves as the writer and director of the series, co-producing alongside Remi Adetiba.

“Anikulapo” achieved a remarkable feat, securing the top spot on the Netflix weekly global chart as the most-viewed non-English Netflix original movie during its release. Within 11 days of its debut, the movie garnered an impressive 8,730,000 hours of viewing between October 3 and October 9, 2022, according to streaming data provider FlixPatrol.

This significant accomplishment becomes even more noteworthy as “Anikulapo” surpassed major worldwide releases like “RRR” and “Adam Project” to claim the leading position. Despite being released in the third quarter of the year, the Nigerian epic fantasy film outshone other films released earlier in March. The movie’s widespread acclaim and rapid accumulation of global views, making it the most-watched non-English movie ever, underscore its substantial impact on the international streaming landscape.

In a year where only four foreign films were released, these statistics highlight 2022 as a standout year for Nollywood, showcasing the success of homegrown content on a global platform.
