The 2022 AMAA Nominations Breakdown + Full List

The Story ⚡

The Africa Movie Academy Awards on Monday, 19th of September, published a list of movies nominated for its 2022 awards.

Tell Me More

Tug of War, a Tanzanian romance flick directed by Amil Shivji, and Surviving Gaza, a South African crime drama directed by Vusi’Africa Sindane lead with nominations in fourteen categories. Other movies that got more than five nominations are Tembele, a Ugandan film directed by Morris Mugisha, which bags ten nominations;

Nigeria’s Man of God, a Nigerian title by Bolanle Austen-Peters, gets nine nominations; Jolly Roger, a Nigerian movie directed by Walter “Banger” Taylaur has eight nominations.

and Swallow, a Nigerian film directed by Kunle Afolayan, has seven nominations.

It’s indeed a tug of war as these titles will jostle for major categories like Best Director, Best Film, Best Leading Actor, and Best Leading Actress.

It is interesting to note that one of the two leading movies, Tug of War, has passed as Tanzania’s entry for Best International Feature at the 95th Oscar awards.

This is coming twenty-one years after the country last vied for the highly-coveted award with Maangamizi: The Ancient One. Last year, Tug of War had its world premiere in the Discovery section of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This made it the first Tanzanian movie to be selected for the festival.

Background

Since its inception in 2005, with the maiden edition held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, the Africa Movie Academy Awards, run through Africa Film Academy, has annually been recognizing and promoting excellence in the African movie industry by awarding individuals who have been contributing to the African film industry. It was founded by Peace Anyiam-Osigwe.

The award is slated to hold in Lagos, Nigeria.

Summary

From early January through June 2022, African filmmakers were asked to submit their films for consideration. if you are quite shocked or surprised by the nods given  – perhaps it’s because of the pool entries submitted for consideration which specified the period of release from May 2021 – April 31st 2022.

And as such doesn’t nearly reflect the quality of work released this year – especially from Nigeria.

The ceremony will hold in Lagos before the end of the year and the winners of the 30 categories reveal.
