The Story ⚡
Set against the backdrop of World War 2, a new Netflix film with all female leads from Tyler Perry is on its way.
Tell Me More
Tyler Perry recently shared glimpses of his upcoming movie on Instagram, dedicated to the true story of the 6888th Battalion, in honour of Black History Month. The film aims to pay tribute to the often-overlooked contributions of the women in the battalion during World War II.
Based on a 2019 article by Kevin M. Hymel from WWII History Magazine, and with President Joe Biden awarding the 6888th Congressional Medal of Honor in 2022, Perry’s script brings their story to light.
The movie, slated to premiere on Netflix, boasts an impressive cast including Kerry Washington, Oprah Winfrey, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga, Moriah Brown, Jeanté Godlock, Jay Reeves, Jeffery Johnson, and many other talented actors.
The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion contributed to the war effort in a unique way: by sorting through a three-year backlog of undelivered mail and delivering the mail to American soldiers far from home.
In the face of discrimination and a vast, unfamiliar country divided by global conflict, these 855 women brought hope to the front lines. “No mail, low morale” was the motto they gave themselves, and they fulfilled the promise of delivered mail (17 million pieces of it!) and morale when the United States needed it most.
Key Background
Tyler Perry has left an indelible mark on American entertainment as a multifaceted actor, filmmaker, and playwright. Best known for creating the iconic character Mabel “Madea” Simmons, Perry’s creative journey began with writing and producing stage plays in the 1990s and early 2000s.
His breakthrough came in 2005 with the film adaptation of Diary of a Mad Black Woman, a success that paved the way for a series of hit films and television shows. Perry’s influence expanded when Forbes listed him as the highest-paid man in entertainment in 2011. He formed an exclusive partnership with Oprah Winfrey in 2012, leading to successful scripted projects like Tyler Perry’s House of Payne.
Beyond his own productions, Perry has made a significant impact in Hollywood with roles in various films, including Gone Girl (2014) and Don’t Look Up (2021), along with voice acting in animated movies like The Star (2017) and PAW Patrol: The Movie (2021).
Despite commercial success, Perry’s work has faced criticism for perpetuating negative stereotypes of African Americans. In recognition of his influential contributions, Perry was included in Time’s 100 Most Influential People list in 2020. His philanthropic efforts were acknowledged with the Governor’s Award and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Academy Awards in 2021.
Perry’s cumulative net worth stands at an estimated $1 billion, reflecting not just financial success but also his enduring impact on the cultural landscape.
Tangent
In 2023, Tyler Perry and Netflix joined forces in a creative partnership for a multi-year first-look deal.
Perry will write, direct, and produce feature films for Netflix. Upcoming projects include “Six Triple Eight” and “Mea Culpa” starring Kelly Rowland, centred around a criminal defence attorney taking on a case involving a potentially murderous artist. Perry’s past Netflix films include “A Jazzman’s Blues,” “A Madea Homecoming,” and the thriller “A Fall from Grace.”
Tyler Perry also has a four-picture agreement with Amazon Studios signed in 2022.
Amazon has revealed the first two films under the latter deal: “Black, White & Blue,” a drama exploring police brutality, and “Divorce in the Black,” centred on a fractured marriage. Additionally, Perry is the focus of the documentary “Maxine’s Baby,” offering insights into his extraordinary journey from a homeless playwright to a billionaire media mogul.
The documentary was premiered at AFI Fest before becoming available on Prime Video.
