The Story⚡
Nollywood’s theatrical market has more than doubled in just two years, hitting a record ₦2.26 billion top 10 gross in the first half of 2026. The question now is: has the industry finally entered a new, sustainable commercial era?

Tell Me More
This is the foundational finding of Shock’s H1 2026 Nigerian Box Office Intelligence Series, a nine-report analysis of the top 10 Nollywood films across three consecutive H1 periods, drawing on Comscore Movies data for the West Africa territory from 1 January to 5 July in 2024, 2025, and 2026.
The Nigerian box office closed the first half of 2026 with a top 10 cumulative gross of ₦2,257,851,278, the highest H1 figure ever recorded in the market and more than double the ₦1,058,404,852 posted in H1 2024. Three years of consistent data confirm that the theatrical market is not just growing. It is accelerating.
Overall Market Performance and Growth Trends
The year-on-year growth trajectory provides important context. The top 10 H1 gross rose from ₦1,058,404,852 in 2024 to ₦2,119,944,782 in 2025, a full 100% increase. In 2026, the total advanced further by 6.5% to ₦2,257,851,278. While the pace has moderated from the dramatic 2024–2025 jump, the continued positive movement points to a market that is stabilising at a higher level rather than experiencing a temporary surge.
Three-Year Top 10 Comparison
| Year | Top 10 Total Cume (₦) | No. 1 Film | No. 1 Cume (₦) | YoY Growth |
| 2024 | 1,058,404,852 | Ajosepo | 257,254,189 | — |
| 2025 | 2,119,944,782 | Ori: The Rebirth | 419,570,525 | +100% |
| 2026 | 2,257,851,278 | Call Of My Life | 719,841,658 | +6.5% |
The data shows clear progress on multiple fronts. The No. 1 film gross has increased each year substantially, from ₦257 million in 2024 to over ₦719 million in 2026. This reflects both bigger individual successes and a market capable of supporting larger-scale releases.

| 10 | Iwe Ala* | F1 NOLLYWD | Jun 2026 | 4* | 74,093,920 |
*Note: Iwe Ala was released on 12 June 2026. Only four weeks of data are included up to the 5 July cutoff, and the film was still running.
Call Of My Life stands out as the clear leader. Distributed by FilmOne and released in May, it grossed ₦719,841,658 across nine weeks and alone represented 31.9% of the entire top 10 total. This performance sets a new standard for what a successful Nollywood theatrical release can achieve in the first half of the year.

Distribution Power and Emerging Competition
FilmOne Distribution dominated the chart with 8 of the 10 titles. However, the presence of two strong challengers is noteworthy. The Creek (Blue Pictures Nollywood) and Mother’s Love (Nile Nollywood) both crossed the ₦100 million mark. This is the first time in the three years that challenger distributors have placed multiple films above this threshold in a single H1 window. It suggests a gradual broadening of the competitive landscape even as one major player maintains clear leadership.
The Rising ₦100 Million Benchmark
Eight of the ten films in 2026 crossed ₦100 million. This compares to seven films in H1 2025 and only four in H1 2024. The ₦100 million mark, historically viewed as a major achievement, appears to be transitioning into a standard expectation for any title that secures good distribution, marketing, and audience appeal in a competitive release slot.
The top three films, Call Of My Life, Love And New Notes, and The Return Of Arinzo, collectively earned ₦1,471,812,599. This represents 65.2% of the full top 10 gross, highlighting increasing concentration at the very top. This pattern of a few major titles capturing the majority of earnings has held steady across all three years, suggesting that audience attention and spending power remain focused on the strongest offerings.
The Power of Longevity
Not every success relied on explosive openings. Love And New Notes (released February) and Onobiren (released March) both ran for 15 weeks, the longest runs in the 2026 top 10. These extended theatrical journeys demonstrate that Q1 releases benefiting from strong audience reception and positive word-of-mouth can build impressive cumulative totals through endurance rather than sheer opening scale. This longevity factor is particularly important for filmmakers and distributors planning release calendars, as it shows value in securing screens for sustained periods.

Iwe Ala, with only four weeks of data captured, still made the top 10. Its position at ₦74 million with limited runtime suggests it could climb significantly higher with a full run, further underlining the potential of well-timed mid-year releases.
What This Means for the Industry
The H1 2026 data paints a picture of a theatrical market gaining confidence and depth. Filmmakers now face higher commercial expectations, with the bar for success clearly elevated. Investors may find the improving return profile attractive, as the market demonstrates repeatable capacity for high-grossing titles rather than isolated hits.
The infrastructure supporting these releases, distribution networks, cinema availability, and audience turnout, appears stronger. The fact that eight films crossed ₦100 million and multiple distributors achieved notable success indicates broader participation and wider commercial viability.
From 2024’s more modest base through the explosive growth in 2025 and the continued consolidation in 2026, the trend line is positive. The moderation in year-on-year growth rate should not be mistaken for a slowdown; instead, it reflects a market finding its new normal at a significantly higher revenue level.
