In this romantic comedy, Lunga Shabalala, Sparky Xulu, and Ray Neo Buso step into the spotlight as they embark on the mission to marry before the New Year, aiming to secure the family home their mother, portrayed by Duduzile Ngcobo, intends to pass down.

This sets off a spirited and humorous rivalry among the brothers as they strive to rise to the challenge and claim their cherished inheritance.

Crafted by the pen of Zelipa Zulu and Darrel Bristow-Bovey, directed by Rolisizwe Nikiwe, and produced by Siphiwe Hlabangane, the film also features a stellar cast including Motsoaledi Setumo, Skhumba Hlope, Mamodibe Ramodibe, Didintle Khunou, Monnye Kunupi, and Sihle Ndaba.

In 2021, Netflix commissioned “A Naija Christmas” directed by Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan. The film follows A mother’s Christmas wish — and the grand prize that comes with it — and sets off a fierce competition between her sons.

Not to compare, but it will be fascinating to see the interpretation of this tale with South African talent with South African creators.

Rolie Nikiwe, a seasoned director renowned for his work in action, thriller, and drama genres, is now venturing into the realm of romantic comedy with “A Soweto Love Story.”

He is also credited as the co-creator of Rhythm City, the creative director of the acclaimed drama series Intersexions, and the director of award-winning productions like A Place Called Home, The Lab, Hard Copy, and TshaTsha, Nikiwe has established himself as a prominent figure in the industry.

This branded Netflix feature is made under a deal with Quizzical Pictures, the producers of Netflix hits like Savage Beauty and iNumber Number: Jozi Gold.
