“Agbara Nla” Hits ₦71M Preview and ₦170.59M Opening Weekend, Becomes Biggest Single-Day Preview & 3rd-Biggest Nollywood Debut

The Story ⚡

Agbara Nla is proving that legacy IP can still command a premium, and the run isn’t over. The 33-year-old television staple opened to ₦170.59 million at the Nigerian box office, previews included, and is still climbing, with Sunday alone delivering ₦53.70 million. It’s a blockbuster in the making, and a case study in what a loyal built-in audience is worth.

Tell Me More

Agbara Nla: The Return reached Nigerian cinemas on 1 October 2026. Directed by Damilola and Joshua Mike-Bamiloye and produced under the Mount Zion Film Productions banner in association with Sozo Films and Circuits, the film revisits the 1993 original written by Mike Bamiloye. That earlier work, later known in English as The Ultimate Power, had defined a generation of Nigerian Christian storytelling on home video.

The film now taken to the big screens, places the story of Muwonleru, a community under the influence of the herbalist Isawuru, in contemporary cinema. Mike Bamiloye reprises the role of Isawuru. The supporting cast includes Philip Olubakin, Aanu Kolade Abiodun, Remilekun Mosiko, Gloria Mike-Bamiloye and others. Nile Entertainment handled theatrical distribution.

The timing aligned with Nigeria’s Independence Day holiday, giving the early screenings an extra day of public leisure.

The Preview Numbers That Reset the Chart

Before the official weekend, Agbara Nla recorded approximately ₦71 million from 12,134 admissions during its preview window. Nigerian Box Office data and distributor statements identified this as the largest single-day preview gross recorded in West Africa. It also marked the highest first-day admissions figure for any Nigerian film in 2026 and the biggest first-day gross for a Nollywood title at that point, surpassing the previous ₦45 million first-day mark set by Behind the Scenes in 2025.

The film entered its regular theatrical run already carrying that head start.

Opening Weekend Performance

From Friday 2 October to Sunday 4 October, the film added ₦99.8 million from 16,223 admissions. Combined with the previous total of about ₦71.4 million, the four-day opening frame reached ₦170.6 million from 28,468 admissions.

The Opening Weekend, Day by Day

Sunday, October 4₦53.70M8,678
Friday to Sunday total₦99.15M16,223
Opening total, previews included₦170.59M28,468

The result stood as the biggest non-December Nollywood opening on record, the largest October opening for a Nigerian film, and the strongest opening ever for a faith-based title at the Nigerian box office. Overall, it ranked as the third-biggest Nollywood opening weekend behind two Funke Akindele titles.

How the Numbers Compare

Preview Performance Comparison

Agbara Nla: The Return (2026)≈ ₦71.4 millionBiggest single-day preview in West Africa
Behind the Scenes (2025)₦45 million (previous first-day high)Previous Nollywood first-day benchmark

These figures place Agbara Nla among the highest commercial openers in recent Nollywood history while establishing new category records for faith-based and non-December releases. Preview strength proved decisive: the film arrived at the weekend already holding a substantial lead that few titles match.

Where It Stands Among Nollywood’s Biggest 3-Day Openings

The two films ahead of Agbara Nla both opened in December, the busiest month of the cinema year, and both came from Funke Akindele.

What the Numbers Reveal

Three clear factors drove the performance. First, the intellectual property carried decades of recognition among Christian audiences. Second, the theatrical strategy treated the film as a mainstream cinema release rather than a limited church-circuit project. Third, organised turnout from churches and faith communities filled seats that might otherwise have remained empty for a mid-week or holiday-period release.

Regional data indicated particular strength in the Southwest, consistent with the film’s Yoruba cultural and linguistic roots, though national attendance supported the overall total. The result demonstrated that a carefully positioned faith-based title can compete directly with commercial Nollywood openers when distribution, timing, and audience mobilisation align.

Christian Audiences and the Cinema Experience

From the first screenings, reports described an unusual atmosphere inside auditoriums. Viewers prayed aloud, sang worship songs and, in multiple locations, spoke in tongues while the film continued. Social-media clips from Lagos, Akure and other cities showed packed halls responding as though the screening itself had become a service. Some cinemas adjusted schedules, expanding showtimes or shifting other titles to accommodate demand.

The response reflected the film’s roots in Mount Zion’s long-standing audience. Church networks, Christian influencers and families who had watched the original on VHS decades earlier turned out in numbers. The combination of familiar spiritual themes and theatrical presentation produced both commercial results and visible emotional engagement that went beyond typical cinema behaviour.

In Summary

Agbara Nla: The Return did not simply reopen an old story. It showed that a narrative rooted in spiritual conflict can still command cinema seats, generate measurable box-office records and turn auditoriums into places of collective response.

The ₦71 million preview and over ₦100 million weekend stand as evidence of organised audience power meeting a familiar title. Whether the film’s longer run sustains that momentum will be measured in the weeks ahead, yet the opening has already rewritten the early ledger for faith-based cinema in Nigerian theatres.
