The Story⚡
Four new categories will specifically honor African motion pictures, their lead actors, actresses, and directors when the 58th NAACP Image Awards nominations are revealed on January 7, 2027.

Tell Me More
The 58th NAACP Image Awards will introduce dedicated recognition for African cinema beginning in 2027. Until now, the awards carried no standalone fields reserved for films produced on the continent. The four new motion-picture categories are:
Outstanding African Motion Picture
Outstanding Actor in an African Motion Picture
Outstanding Actress in an African Motion Picture
Outstanding Directing in an African Motion Picture
These join a total of 108 categories across the awards. Eligible work must have been released between January 1 and December 31, 2026. Submissions opened August 31, 2026, and close November 13, 2026. Nominating committees will review entries in December before the public announcement.
Nominations Drop Date
On January 7, 2027, the NAACP will release the full list of nominees. Public voting opens the same day and closes February 1, 2027. The ceremony date itself has not yet been announced. This timeline gives African filmmakers, performers, and directors a clear window to submit and then to compete in categories created expressly for their work.
Why These Categories Matter for African Cinema
African film production has expanded steadily in recent years. Nigerian cinema (Nollywood) continues to release thousands of titles annually and has secured wider international distribution through streaming platforms. Other national industries across the continent have likewise increased visibility through festival selections, co-productions, and digital reach. The new categories create formal space for that output inside an awards structure long focused on Black excellence in the United States and the diaspora.
By separating African motion pictures, their principal performers, and their directors from broader international or general fields, the Image Awards acknowledge the distinct creative ecosystems operating on the continent while still placing them under the same institutional umbrella. The NAACP described the overall expansion, including these film categories, as building “a cultural bridge between Africa and the global Black diaspora while celebrating the continent’s growing influence across film, television and music.”
How the Process Works
The four African film categories sit alongside other categories in the 2027 slate, including the return of daytime drama fields, breakthrough performance categories for actors and actresses in motion pictures, and additional television and recording fields. Their specific focus on African cinema remains the clearest structural change for films from the continent.

In Summary
The 58th NAACP Image Awards will mark the first time African creative work receives its own set of ten dedicated categories, turning a long-standing gap into a formal bridge. The ceremony itself is not yet dated, but the calendar is already clear: submissions are underway, nominations are in January 2027, and a new chapter of recognition is waiting to be written.
