The Story⚡
The panel is locked in for a no-holds-barred post-AMVCA 12 conversation. Shock Africa’s State of the Nollywood Industry brings together sharp voices to examine the night’s outcomes with clear eyes and direct questions.

Tell Me More
Akintunde Damilare, co-founder of Shock Africa, hosts the special edition of State of the Nollywood Industry. Vivian Nwajiaku, Head of Film & TV at Afrocritik, Oris Aigbokhaevbolo, a respected film journalist and critic, and Tito Abumere, a prominent movie reviewer and YouTuber, join him. Together, they will break down the results from the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards held on May 9, 2026.

My Father’s Shadow, directed by Akinola Davies Jr., emerged as the biggest winner of the night, securing five awards, including Best Movie, Best Director, Best Writing, Best Score, and Best Sound Design. The film, which had already made history by being selected for Cannes, stood out for its craft and storytelling. Linda Ejiofor made history by winning both Best Lead Actress for The Serpent’s Gift and Best Supporting Actress for The Herd in the same ceremony. Uzor Arukwe took Best Lead Actor for his performance in Colours of Fire.

Other notable wins went to films such as To Kill a Monkey, which received recognition in technical categories like cinematography and editing, and Colours of Fire, which excelled in areas including costume design and art direction. Veterans Sola Sobowale and Kanayo O. Kanayo received Industry Merit Awards for their contributions to African cinema, while Uche Montana was honoured with the Trailblazer Award.
The panel is expected to explore not only the standout victories but also the films and performances that received strong nominations yet went home without awards. They will examine what the outcomes suggest about the balance between commercial success, technical excellence, festival recognition, and audience expectations in today’s Nollywood and broader African film landscape. The conversation aims for depth and candour rather than surface-level commentary.
The episode premieres on Monday, May 11 at 8 PM on Shock Africa platforms.
