The Story⚡
In Alexandra Township, the Nkosi family’s lounge Emzini stands as a visible symbol of success. Yet the business that built its status also conceals the decisions and secrets that shaped it. When those truths begin to surface, family bonds are tested in e.tv’s new daily drama Emzini: A Family Legacy.
Tell Me More
The series follows the Nkosi family and their interactions with the Modise family in a story centred on legacy, survival and the consequences of past choices. Set against the everyday realities of township life and economic pressure, the drama examines how one family’s lounge business becomes both a source of pride and a point of conflict. The production comes from The Final Chapter, the team behind Smoke & Mirrors, with Loyiso Maqoma as creator and head writer.
At the centre is Wiseman Mncube as Shaka Nkosi, the eldest son expected to lead the family empire. Mncube, born in Durban in 1990 and a graduate of Durban University of Technology’s drama programme, has built a reputation through roles in Gold Diggers, EHostela (as Jama), Uzalo, The Wife (as Mqhele Zulu) and Shaka iLembe (as King Zwide). His work as a playwright and director adds depth to a character who must reconcile ambition with newly revealed family truths.
Khabonina Qubeka plays Dudu Nkosi, the matriarch whose determination built the lounge from the ground up. Born in Soweto in 1981, Qubeka is an established actress, dancer, choreographer and television presenter known for roles in Isidingo, Muvhango, Rhythm City and the film Dora’s Peace, which earned her Best Actress at the 2017 Boston International Film Festival. Her portrayal draws on years of experience conveying resilience under pressure.

Muzi Mthabela appears as Zakhele Nkosi, the retired police officer whom Shaka has always known as his father. Mthabela, born in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal, and raised in Clermont and eMandeni, began his screen career after moving to Johannesburg in 1999. He is recognised for recurring roles in Isibaya (as Duma) and appearances in series such as Jacob’s Cross, The Road and Saints and Sinners. His character faces the emotional strain of long-held family deceptions.

Dumisani Mbebe portrays Panyaza Fakude, a man returning after 25 years in prison for a crime linked to the Nkosi family’s past. Mbebe is a veteran performer best known for his long-running role as Dumisani Shabani in Generations and appearances in Soul City, Isidingo and the international medical drama ER. Trained with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Psychology, plus a Master’s in drama, he brings experience in portraying complex figures confronting redemption and accountability.

Tyson Mathonsi takes the role of Bandile Nkosi, the ambitious middle son determined to secure his place in the family business. Born in KwaZulu-Natal and a performance-arts graduate, Mathonsi has appeared in Sibongile & The Dlaminis (as Jabu), Muvhango (as Sakhile), DiepCity and the Umjolo film series. He also works as a producer and musician, adding layers to a character navigating rivalry and expectation.

Manqoba Khumalo plays Junior Nkosi, the youngest son whose interest in music and DJing sets him apart from the family’s commercial focus—until external events pull him into the centre of events. Khumalo is a newer face in television whose casting signals the series’ investment in fresh talent alongside established names.

Bokang Phelane is Rorisang Modise, a principled young woman from the Modise family working to restore her household’s standing after hardship. The Mosotho actress, producer and director is known for roles in Blood Psalms (as Princess Zazi), Emoyeni (as Lily on Netflix), Justice Served, Keeping Score and Giyani – Land of Blood. Her character introduces conflict and moral perspective from outside the Nkosi circle.

Thuso Mokoena completes the main ensemble as Oratilwe Modise, Rorisang’s sister and a talented musician seeking escape through her art. Mokoena, aged 23 and trained at Star Quality Creative Arts College, has appeared in Genesis and House of Zwide. Her role highlights themes of ambition and unintended connections to the Nkosi family’s history.

Together, the cast forms an ensemble that mixes seasoned performers with emerging talent, each bringing lived experience to characters shaped by the same township realities the series depicts.
