“Oversabi Aunty” Nears ₦1B, And “BTS” On Track For ₦2B To Open 2026 Nollywood Box Office

Nollywood opened 2026 on a high note, with holdover titles delivering strong weekend performances. Toyin Abraham’s Oversabi Aunty moved closer to the ₦1 billion mark, while Funke Akindele’s Behind The Scenes continued its run toward ₦2 billion.

December’s box office results showed continued audience support for Nollywood films, as local stories outperformed most international releases. 

Behind The Scenes led the chart in its fourth weekend with ₦345.4 million, pushing its cumulative total to ₦1.769 billion. Released on December 12, 2025, the film follows Aderonke Faniran, a successful real estate mogul and mother of two, whose boundless generosity leaves her depleted as those around her come to expect it without reciprocation. Directed by Funke Akindele and Tunde Olaoye, it features a cast including Funke Akindele, Tobi Bakre, Iyabo Ojo, Ini Dima-Okojie, Uzor Arukwe, and Ibrahim Chatta.

Oversabi Aunty placed second in its third weekend, earning ₦176.5 million and reaching a cumulative ₦711.6 million. Released on December 19, 2025, and directed by Toyin Abraham, the comedy centres on a zealous church usher whose efforts to correct everyone’s behaviour disrupt family relationships, leading to chaos that peaks during a wedding introduction. Key cast members include Toyin Abraham, Ngozi Ezeonu, and Emeka Okoye.

James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash (commonly referred to as Avatar 3) took third in its second weekend with ₦75.1 million, bringing its cumulative total to ₦470 million. Released on December 19, 2025, the film continues the story on Pandora, where Jake Sully and Neytiri’s family deals with loss while facing the aggressive Ash People tribe amid rising conflict. The principal cast includes Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri, Oona Chaplin as Varang, and Jack Champion as Spider.

Colours of Fire, directed by Niyi Akinmolayan and released on December 24, 2025, held fourth in its second weekend with ₦25.6 million earned, lifting its cumulative total to ₦102.7 million. This epic follows a warrior tasked with hunting a beast thought to be sent by his clan’s rivals, only to discover hidden truths and form a forbidden connection that forces a choice between duty and love. The cast features Gabriel Afolayan, Mercy Aigbe, Osas Ighodaro, Uzor Arukwe, and Femi Branch.

Disney’s Zootopia 2 rounded out the top five in its sixth weekend, grossing ₦19.8 million and achieving a cumulative ₦179.2 million. Released on November 26, 2025, the animated sequel sees Officer Judy Hopps and con artist-turned-partner Nick Wilde reunite to investigate a perilous new case shaking the city of Zootopia. It features the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps, Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde, Idris Elba, Shakira, and Ke Huy Quan.

In Summary

Current trends indicate robust first-month performances for the movies as they near or pass the 30-day mark. Behind The Scenes is showing strong legs and is on pace to close its opening month well north of ₦1.8 billion, keeping it firmly in contention for a ₦2 billion total. Oversabi Aunty continues to build steadily and appears headed for a first-month finish in the upper ₦800 million to low ₦900 million range, bringing it within striking distance of ₦1 billion.
