Waiting in the Wings: Where Will AFRIFF 2024’s Buzziest Nollywood Films Land?

The Story⚡

AFRIFF 2024 showcased Nollywood’s best, but the industry’s biggest hurdle remains: getting films from festival screens to mainstream audiences.

Despite the buzz, many of this year’s most talked-about titles surprisingly didn’t secure acquisition deals, as many had hoped. Instead, these titles have now set their sights on theatrical releases, opting for the hard way – the only way.

Tell Me More

The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) returned for its 13th edition, taking place from November 3rd to 9th, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria. The festival once again served as a prestigious platform for filmmakers to showcase their work, facilitating opportunities for distribution and acquisition while providing audiences with a diverse selection of compelling narratives.

Last year’s festival featured a variety of films spanning multiple genres, including thrillers, biopics, historical dramas, and action-packed crime thrillers. While some titles made their world premiere, others had previously been screened.

For many filmmakers, getting their films into festivals like AFRIFF is a strategic move, primarily for distribution deals. Festivals offer producers the opportunity to attract potential buyers and secure licensing agreements. However, while AFRIFF has been instrumental in helping many films find homes, not every title achieves this goal immediately.

Notable Nollywood Films at AFRIFF 2024

Several highly anticipated Nollywood films were showcased at AFRIFF 2024. From gripping thrillers to heart-wrenching dramas, here are some standout titles and their current distribution status.

Written and produced by Blessing Uzzi and marking Afolabi Olalekan’s directorial debut, the action thriller was produced by Bluhouse Studios and received an overwhelmingly positive reception at AFRIFF 2024. Audiences praised its gripping storytelling, with many hailing it as a powerful social commentary on Nigerian society.

Prior to its AFRIFF screening, Freedom Way had its world premiere in the Discovery section of the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7.

However, since its screening in November, there has been no official word on the film’s distribution plans.

It is undeniable that distribution has become increasingly challenging for Nollywood films. A major factor contributing to this is the decision by Netflix and Prime Video to scale back on commissioning and acquiring Nollywood titles. This unfortunate shift poses a significant setback for the Nigerian film industry, restricting the distribution opportunities that producers once relied on.

When comparing AFRIFF 2024 titles with those from 2023, it becomes evident that the previous year may have been more favourable for Nollywood producers. Let’s take a look at some of the films from AFRIFF 2023 and how they eventually found their way to audiences.

The film premiered at the 12th edition of the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), where it won Best Overall Feature Film and Best Screenplay.

Following its AFRIFF debut, the film hit theatres on May 17, 2024. It is now available for streaming on Prime Video.

In Summary

Compared to AFRIFF 2023, titles from AFRIFF 2024 have struggled to secure acquisitions and distribution deals, limiting their reach to audiences.

This stark contrast highlights the growing challenges filmmakers now face in navigating the ever-evolving distribution landscape. With fewer opportunities for licensing and theatrical runs, the industry is witnessing a concerning gap that could affect the visibility and commercial success of emerging films.

This trend underscores the urgent need for more accessible and sustainable distribution channels to support filmmakers in bringing their stories to a wider audience.
