Tangent
Nigeria’s hit series “Smart Money Woman” is making a surprise move to YouTube for its second season, after talks with Netflix reportedly fell through. The global streaming giant, known for its appetite for African content, ultimately passed on acquiring the highly anticipated series.
Meanwhile, other major players in the African market are scaling back: Prime Video has frozen its operations, and Showmax’s slate appetite is insufficient to meet the demand for high-quality content.
The shift to YouTube signals a significant change in the balance of power, but also presents a challenge. YouTube’s monetization model favors long-form content, such as feature films, over episodic series. Additionally, the platform’s revenue-sharing structure and algorithm prioritize consistency and viewer engagement over short-term gains.
This means “Smart Money Woman”‘s creators have boldly adopt a long-game strategy, building audience loyalty and engagement over time. Despite these challenges, YouTube’s vast audience and flexible monetization options make it an attractive option for African producers seeking control and global reach.
In Summary
The YouTube premiere of “Smart Money Woman” Season 2 is poised to capitalize on the franchise’s existing momentum.
Having accumulated 500,000 views for its first season recently uploaded, a 300% increase to 2 million views within the first month is forecasted, underscoring the platform’s potential for African content and the show’s enduring popularity.
