“Makemation”: Africa’s Groundbreaking AI Film Set for Box Office Debut

The Story⚡

This Easter weekend, a historic moment unfolds at the box office as Makemation—Africa’s first AI-powered film—makes its much-anticipated debut alongside other major releases. Here’s everything we know so far.

Tell Me More

Makemation is an inspiring coming-of-age drama set in rural Lagos, Nigeria, following 17-year-old Zara Sodangi, a brilliant but underprivileged girl who earns a spot at the country’s most prestigious tech school. Faced with poverty, ailing parents, social prejudice, and self-doubt, Zara navigates the high-pressure world of artificial intelligence, product design, and data analytics while trying to win a life-changing scholarship that could lift her family out of hardship. With mentorship, resilience, and a sharp mind, Zara’s journey is filled with emotional twists, personal growth, and the universal message that with determination and innovation, even the most daunting obstacles can be overcome.

The film proudly stands as Africa’s first feature-length production to spotlight the rising influence of its youth, especially young girls, highlighting how they harness artificial intelligence and cutting-edge tech innovations to confront some of the continent’s most pressing challenges.

The title stars Tomi Ojo, Chimezie Imo, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Shaffy Bello, Yvonne Jegede, Tony Umez, Jide Kosoko, Ibrahim Chatta, and many more.

Speaking about the film at its premiere, Tomi Ojo, the film’s lead cast, said, “The first few days that we filmed were at Bariga, and I just imagined what it would be like if I were somebody from a zero background. I need to strive, work hard and get an education. What would be my thought processes? I just embodied the thought and made it work into portraying the character.”

She further added, “It’s that thought-provoking film. It’s a conversation-provoking film. We want to see people break barriers and do things differently and reach for the sky, which they think is that far to reach. We want to see people empowering themselves and reaching for that opportunity.”

Also, speaking, Chimezie Imo said, “Makemation is just that film I think every young person who isn’t sure of what they want to do with their life, even if they think they are sure, should watch. It opens your eyes to opportunities in the tech world, especially. It is for those who want to pursue a career in the tech world and are confused about what AI is. I think the film is one that enlightens you about tech generally.”

In Summary

As an AI-driven film, a novelty in the Nigerian cinematic landscape with no pre-existing fanbase, Makemation dares to tread where few have gone. Will its unique blend of technology, storytelling, and youthful ambition resonate with audiences and spark a new wave of innovation-inspired cinema? As it makes its debut this Easter, the big question lingers: Can Makemation capture the hearts of Nigerians and earn its place as the unexpected blockbuster of 2025?
