The Story⚡

Inkblot Productions’ romantic drama, “A Lagos Love Story”, is now streaming globally on Amazon Prime US and UK, bringing the vibrant city of Lagos to the diaspora market.

Tell Me More

A Lagos Love Story is a Nollywood romantic comedy that unfolds during Lagos’ Art and Culture week, where Promise Quest, an aspiring event planner, battles to save her family home from foreclosure. Assigned to manage King Kator, a headstrong Afrobeat superstar, Promise navigates a fiery romance amid his bold antics. Her free-spirited sister, Favor, adds chaos, chasing the allure of Lagos’ rich and famous.

Directed by Naz Onuzo, who co-wrote the script with Ozzy Etomi, the film features a dynamic cast: Jemima Osunde, Susan Pwajok, Mike Afolarin, Uche Montana, Kalu Ikeagwu, Chimezie Imo, IK Osakioduwa, Linda Ejiofor, Uti Nwachukwu, Oshodi-Glover Olakunle, Lanre Da Silva, Mailya Micheal, Veeiye, Cassandra Chiamaka Onyeyili, Itele, Juliet Dunu, Uncle Bubu, Shamsudeen Garuba, and Dayo Adeoye.

Produced by Inkblot Productions, with executive producers Naz Onuzo, Zulu Oyibo, and Damola Ademola, the title began streaming on Netflix on April 11, 2025, and is now on Amazon Prime in the US and UK, less than a month after the Netflix debut.

Deal Breakdown

In an exclusive feature with SHOCK Newsroom, Writer/Director Naz Onuzo revealed that “A Lagos Love Story” originated as a Netflix-developed title, pitched at Afriff 2023.
Netflix greenlit the project and released funds for principal photography in 2024. However, following Netflix’s strategic shift in its Nigerian market approach, the platform opted to limit its involvement to African rights. Inkblot Productions retained international rights and licensed them to Amazon Prime in under a month, effectively maximizing returns.
By securing funding from Netflix for African rights and licensing international rights to Prime, Inkblot emerged as the major winner, capitalizing on the film’s global appeal. This rare deal reflects the dynamic nature of the stream wars in Nigeria, where platforms are recalibrating their strategies.
The Netflix deal for “A Lagos Love Story” raises eyebrows, as the platform paid in full for production but opted to retain only African rights, reverting global rights to Inkblot Productions. This unusual arrangement likely reflects Netflix’s shifting priorities in the Nigerian market, ultimately allowing Inkblot to license international rights to Amazon Prime and maximize the film’s global reach.
The deal reveals a nuanced dynamic in Nollywood’s evolving landscape, where Netflix co-funded “A Lagos Love Story” yet Amazon licensed international rights, allowing Inkblot Productions to reap additional revenue from the partnership, showcasing how complex financing and distribution arrangements can benefit local producers.

In Summary

The saying “Only on Netflix” is officially redundant, and it comes with mixed emotions for the Nigerian film and TV market. While some see it as a sign of a maturing industry with more opportunities for global distribution, others view it as a loss of leverage for local creators.
