Smids Animation Studios proudly announces that Hadu, the latest animated short film directed by Damilola Solesi, has received international recognition by winning Best Animation at both the Fak’ugesi Digital Africa Festival and the African International Film Festival (AFRIFF).

In addition to these accolades, Hadu has also been officially selected to screen at several prestigious film festivals, including the ANIMAGE Festival in Brazil, the Silicon Valley African Film Festival in the USA, and the CINANIMA – International Animated Film Festival of Espinho, Portugal, an Academy Award-qualifying festival.

Hadu is a non-dialogue, visually stunning animated short that explores family, culture, and heritage themes. The film follows the journey of Simi, a young girl who reconnects with her roots through the cherished bond with her grandmother. Rich with magical realism and a touch of nostalgia, Hadu captures the essence of 1990s Nollywood cinema, presenting an Afro-contemporary narrative that celebrates the resilience, joy, and enduring legacy of African traditions.

“We aimed to create a film that reflects the richness of Afro-contemporary culture and the unspoken connections that bind families together,” said Damilola Solesi, Director of Hadu and Founder of Smids Animation Studios. “Winning Best Animation at Fak’ugesi and AFRIFF, and screening at these internationally respected festivals, is both humbling and a testament to the global appeal of African stories. We’re honoured to share Hadu with audiences worldwide.”

The global festival selections for Hadu mark a significant milestone for African animation. They showcase the studio’s commitment to powerful storytelling and cultural representation. Each festival platform allows Hadu to resonate with diverse audiences and inspire the next generation of African animators.
