Following its successful screening at the 13th AFRIFF Festival in Lagos, A Ghetto Love Story ranked as the second most-watched movie at the Nigerian box office last week, from the 22nd to the 24th of November. That weekend was the opening weekend of the film.
A Ghetto Love Story tells the heartfelt romantic story of Obinna and Stella, childhood friends whose shared dreams of a lasting connection are tested by the harsh realities of life. Though they come from modest beginnings, their deep bond remains a source of profound happiness.
Written by Basketmouth and Victoria Eze, the flick was directed by Daniel Oriahi and executive-produced by Basketmouth. It stars Dibor Adaobi, Chioma Chukwuka Akpotha, Dorathy Bachor, Jude Chukwuka, Basketmouth, Efe Irele, Femi Jacobs, Wale, and a host of other A-list cast.
In its opening weekend, the romance title grossed ₦21.2 Million with a flash cum of ₦22.3 million.

The American action-adventure Christmas fantasy comedy film written by Chris Morgan and directed by Jake Kasdan. The film is an original story by Hiram Garcia. Released on the 14th of November, 2024, Red One stars Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, J. K. Simmons, etc.
Last weekend, the action title made a sum of ₦6.5 million, pushing its total cum to ₦71.3 million.
4. Venom 3
Released on the 25th of October, 2024, Venom: The Last Dance is an American superhero flick written and directed by Kelly Marcel. It features the Marvel Comics character Venom. The title is the final instalment of the Venom trilogy, which follows Venom (2018) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021).
Last weekend, Venom 3 made a sum of ₦8.3 million with a flash cum of ₦298.2 million.
3. Wicked
The musical fantasy film was written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox and directed by Jon M. Chu. It is the first of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical Wicked by Stephen Schwartz and Holzman, based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire.
The title was released on the 22nd of November, 2024, and opened with ₦17.1 million at the weekend of its release.

In its second weekend at the Nigeria box office, the flick grossed ₦60.1 million, with its flash cume now at ₦202.4 million.
Future Competition Against A Ghetto Love Story
A major competition against A Ghetto Love Story is the latest installment of the Jenifa franchise by Funke Akindele, Everybody Loves Jenifa. The highly-anticipated title will debut at cinemas across the country on the 13th of December, 2024. The title has an interesting cast assemblage, which comprises of Funke Akindele, Nancy Isime, Bisola Aiyeola, Stan Nze, Patience Ozokwor, Isaac Olayiwola (Layi Wasabi), Jackie Appiah, Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana, Omowunmi Dada, and a host of others.
Everybody Loves Jenifa was directed by Funke Akindele and Tunde Olaoye. The film follows the story of Funke Akindele, who is reprising her role as Jenifa in the franchise.
The comedy title stands as a major opposition to A Ghetto Love Story because it is eagerly expected to dominate the box office when released. This projection follows from Funke Akindele’s previous successes with Omo Ghetto the Saga (2020), Battle on Buka Street (2022), and A Tribe Called Judah (2023), which broken records as the first Nigerian film to gross over ₦1 billion.
Everybody Loves Jenifa’s period at the box office might stifle A Ghetto Love Story figure. However, we can only wait to see.
