From a Lagos studio, a Nigerian designer’s early sketches for Wakandan warriors earned television’s highest individual animation honour.

Uzoma Dunkwu studied electrical and electronics engineering at the University of Benin. He developed drawing, comics, illustration, and concept art skills independently. In 2015, he moved fully into animation and founded Scroll Entertainment Studio in Lagos, focusing on illustration, storyboards, concept art, and related work. He has worked as a visual development artist, character designer, animation director, and educator. His credits include projects associated with Marvel, Netflix, and Disney, as well as character design on the animated series Iyanu and Iyanu: The Age of Wonders.
Contribution to Eyes of Wakanda
In August 2021, Dunkwu joined Marvel Animation’s Eyes of Wakanda as an early concept artist under director Todd Harris. The four-episode Disney+ anthology follows Wakandan operatives known as the Hatut Zaraze who recover vibranium artefacts across different historical periods. Dunkwu created initial designs for five Dora Milaje characters, including Noni. Those designs later informed character work across the series under supervisor Joshua James Shaw. He refined Noni and contributed designs for characters including Old Noni, Kuda, Tafari, High Councilman Rakim, an 1885 Wakandan Queen, Lion Captain, and crowd figures in all four episodes. The series premiered on Disney+ on 1 August 2025.
The Emmy Recognition
The Television Academy named Dunkwu a juried winner of Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation for Character Design, recognising his work on the episode “Into the Lion’s Den.” Juried awards are decided by panels of industry professionals rather than open voting; panels may select one, several, or no recipients. The winners were announced in August 2026. The award was presented during the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies held in Los Angeles in early September 2026. Dunkwu had previously received a Concept Art Association Award for animated-series character concept work on Noni from the same project. He said the work was selected from hundreds of entries and dedicated the recognition to emerging artists in Nigeria and the Global South.
Working from Lagos
Dunkwu carried out the concept and design work while based in Lagos. The recognition shows that an artist can contribute to a major international production and receive formal acknowledgement without relocating. His designs helped define the visual appearance of characters in a series that places Wakandan figures in varied historical settings.
Design in Context
The award recognises specific character design decisions, form, costume, expression, and cultural detail made during the series’s early development and refinement stages. It provides a documented example of individual craft receiving peer recognition within television animation.
