The Story⚡
From dominating cinema screens to digital platforms and now major global streaming, King of Thieves (Agesinkole) has achieved a rare and remarkable distribution journey in just four years.
Tell Me More
King of Thieves (Agesinkole) stands out as one of the few Nollywood franchises to successfully navigate a complete, high-impact distribution cycle within four years. The series has moved seamlessly from strong theatrical performance to major digital platforms and now to Netflix Africa, earning it a “golden distribution crown” in contemporary Nollywood.
The 2022 film, directed by Adebayo Tijani and Tope Adebayo and produced by Femi Adebayo (who stars as Agesinkole), tells the tale of a prosperous Yoruba kingdom thrown into turmoil by a powerful bandit. As Agesinkole’s reign of terror intensifies, the kingdom mobilizes warriors, hunters, and spiritual forces in a desperate bid to restore peace. The story blends intense action with Yoruba mysticism, including charms, ancestral powers, and supernatural elements.
It features a strong ensemble cast, including Odunlade Adekola as the King, Toyin Abraham as the Queen, Ibrahim Chatta, Lateef Adedimeji, Broda Shaggi, and veterans such as Adebayo Salami. Known for its high production values, one of the more ambitious Yoruba-language projects at the time with a budget exceeding ₦100 million, the film earned praise for its cultural authenticity, visual scale, and epic storytelling.

Agesinkole Part 1’s Remarkable Journey And Distribution Cycle
Agesinkole: King of Thieves Part 1 had a very successful theatrical run. It opened strongly and reportedly grossed over ₦170 million within its first three weeks in cinemas. By the end of its theatrical window, the film had accumulated a total box office of ₦320.8 million, making it one of the highest-grossing Nigerian films of 2022. This performance was particularly notable for a Yoruba-language epic, as it demonstrated strong audience demand for culturally rooted, large-scale storytelling.
After its cinema run concluded, the film followed a deliberate distribution path. It first became available on Prime Video for a period, allowing digital access to a broader audience. Four years after its original theatrical release, it made a significant return by premiering on Netflix across Africa on June 26, 2026. This move is notable because it marks Part 1 as the first Nollywood film in the space of four years to complete such an extensive distribution cycle, from theatrical release to digital platforms like Prime Video and finally to a major global streamer like Netflix.

Agesinkole Part 2’s Groundbreaking Community Cinema Strategy And Distribution Cycle
For Agesinkole: King of Thieves Part 2, Femi Adebayo and his team took a bold and innovative approach to distribution. Co-produced by Euphoria360 Media and Circuits, the sequel bypassed the conventional nationwide multiplex-heavy model. Instead, it was released exclusively through a network of Community Cinemas across six states in Southwest Nigeria. The theatrical window ran for a focused 12-day period from December 24, 2025, to January 4, 2026.
This community-focused strategy was designed to make cinema accessible to a wider demographic, particularly people in local areas who may not frequently visit big-city multiplexes. Ticket prices were deliberately kept affordable at ₦4,000 in Lagos and ₦3,000 outside Lagos, encouraging families and community groups to attend together. The initiative combined big-screen experience with local convenience, featuring daily screenings in neighborhood venues equipped for quality viewing.

The results were impressive. The film grossed ₦417 million in just 12 days, a remarkable achievement widely reported as a milestone for Nollywood, and grossed ₦425.01 million by the end of its box office run. It is recognized as the first major Nollywood title to successfully use a community cinema distribution model at this scale, proving that strategic localization and affordability can drive strong commercial performance without relying solely on traditional high-end cinemas.
Following this successful theatrical phase, Part 2 is now expanding its reach. It will begin streaming on Netflix across Africa on July 24, 2026, and will simultaneously be available on Circuits for global audiences outside Africa.
