Sue Nyathi’s 2012 debut novel The Polygamist arrives on screen as a 22-episode telenovela on Netflix. Produced by Stained Glass Productions, the series premieres on 12 June 2026. It adapts the book’s core focus on four women whose lives intersect through their connections to Jonasi Gomora, a self-made banking magnate in modern-day Zimbabwe.

In the novel, the story unfolds primarily through the perspectives of the women. Joyce Gomora is Jonasi’s first and legal wife. She and Jonasi met when she was 16, and he was 21. They built their life together from very modest beginnings. Joyce enjoyed the material rewards of their success, a comfortable home, a Mercedes, and the social status that came with being married to one of the few wealthy Black businessmen in Zimbabwe. For a long time, she believed their marriage was solid, until evidence of infidelity surfaced, particularly after the birth of their fourth child.

Matipa enters as an ambitious, educated, and glamorous woman who views power, money, and success as compelling. She works her way into Jonasi’s professional world at J&J Holdings and becomes involved with him personally, positioning herself as a rival to Joyce. Her character is often described in reviews as calculating and determined not to wait for a man to achieve potential but to secure immediate advantages.

Essie represents a longer, quieter connection. She and Jonasi grew up in the same township. After his marriage to Joyce, Jonasi maintained a secret relationship with Essie, whom some accounts describe as his second wife in practice. Essie is portrayed as knowing her place in the hierarchy — present for years, familiar with Jonasi’s patterns, and often the one he returns to when other relationships face difficulties.

Lindani is the fourth woman, younger and focused on social elevation. She sees in Jonasi a path to a more comfortable life. Like others before her, she enters with expectations shaped by what Jonasi can provide, but the realities of his divided attention create complications.

The book examines the emotional, social, and economic consequences for each woman. It addresses themes of infidelity, rivalry between the women, unequal power in relationships, and the personal costs that come with dependence on one man’s resources and decisions. Nyathi presents these dynamics without romanticizing the arrangement, showing the strain, secrecy, and varying degrees of awareness or acceptance among the characters. Some reviews note elements of emotional and physical strain within the relationships.

The Netflix adaptation shifts the story into a telenovela format while keeping the central premise. Sdumo Mtshali plays Jonasi Gomora, the central figure whose business success contrasts with the instability in his personal life. Gugu Gumede portrays Joyce, the matriarch and social media influencer whose polished public image faces pressure as hidden truths emerge. The ensemble cast includes S’thandiwe Kgoroge, Kwanele Mthethwa, and others in roles representing the additional women and supporting characters.

Stained Glass Productions, known for popular South African series such as Uzalo, The Wife, and Durban Gen, leads the project. Executive producers are Gugu Zuma-Ncube, Thuli Zuma, and Pepsi Pokane. Directors include Akin Omotoso, Rolie Nikiwe, and Nthabi Tau. Busisiwe Zwane serves as head writer. The production blends the Zimbabwean setting and literary origins with the dramatic style familiar to telenovela audiences.

Early teasers highlight boardroom tensions, luxurious settings, family confrontations, and the unraveling of secrets. Joyce’s arc receives particular attention in promotional material, focusing on her decision to reclaim dignity and self-worth amid betrayals. The series expands the interpersonal conflicts across 22 episodes, allowing space for character development, business intrigue, and the ripple effects on children and extended family.

Nyathi’s novel has been noted for its first-person narratives that rotate among the women, giving each a distinct voice and perspective. This multi-viewpoint approach is likely carried into the screen version to show how the same events and the same man look different depending on each woman’s position, history, and expectations. The adaptation brings a Zimbabwean literary work to a global platform through a South African production team experienced in long-form serialized drama.

The length of the series suggests sustained focus on how initial attractions, financial incentives, emotional dependencies, and eventual confrontations play out over time rather than resolving quickly.
