Without Filmhouse Cinemas, The Michael Jackson Biopic Has Made ₦323 Million In Nigeria, And Is Eyeing ₦400 Million.

The Story⚡

The Michael Jackson biopic Michael has stormed the Nigerian box office with ₦323.6 million in just ten days, one of the strongest Hollywood openings of 2026, despite having zero screens at Filmhouse Cinemas.

Tell Me More

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson (Michael’s nephew) in the lead role, the film follows the entertainer’s life and career.

The movie opened with ₦111.6 million in its initial days and reached ₦123.2 million over the three-day weekend, and is now nearly hitting ₦350 million.

In Nigeria, Nile Entertainment handled local distribution. Advance screenings began around April 22, with wider release following. The film played at other major venues, including Silverbird, Genesis, EbonyLife, and various independent or regional cinemas.

Michael Is Thriving at the Box Office, Without Filmhouse Cinemas

Michael opened in Nigerian cinemas without Filmhouse Cinemas on board. In theatrical releases, international studios typically partner with local distributors like Nile Entertainment, who negotiate with cinema exhibitors (the chains that own and operate the theatres) on revenue-sharing terms, screen allocation, and marketing. These negotiations determine how ticket sales are split between the distributor and the exhibitor.

In this case, talks between Nile Entertainment and Filmhouse Cinemas broke down over the percentage split, preventing the biopic from screening at Filmhouse cinema locations nationwide. Nevertheless, the film moved forward without one of the country’s largest chains in its release plan, and the numbers have held up regardless.

The biopic pulled ₦123.2 million in its opening three days, one of Nigeria’s strongest debuts in 2026. It closed its first week at ₦193 million, then added ₦130 million in the second weekend, still at No. 1.

The performance raises straightforward questions on both sides. For Filmhouse Cinemas, it shows that a well-received title can draw consistent crowds without its screens in the mix. For Nile Entertainment, the lingering question is how much higher the total could have gone with fuller national coverage.

Either way, the film is doing well, and audiences have shown up wherever it’s playing.

By not exhibiting Michael, Filmhouse Cinemas missed out on a high-performing title that delivered strong returns. The absence redirected audiences and revenue to other exhibitors, such as Ebony Life, Silverbird, and Genesis, who benefited significantly from the surge in foot traffic and ticket sales at their locations.

Michael vs Crime 101: Box Office Comparison

Even without Filmhouse, Michael has significantly outperformed FilmOne’s local release, Crime 101, which had full access to Filmhouse Cinemas. Here is a detailed comparison:

MetricMichaelCrime 101Notes
Previews11,218,022Michael only
Opening Weekend (3 days)112,354,10034,768,680Michael nearly 3.2x higher
Opening Week (7 days)181,678,29648,608,750
10 Days Cumulative323,891,41272,179,246Michael over 4.5x higher

Admissions45,75622,778Michael doubled Crime 101
The numbers clearly show that strong audience demand for Michael, fueled by Michael Jackson’s legendary status across Nigeria and West Africa, has overcome the limitation of missing a major cinema chain.

For the broader industry, the situation illustrates structural dynamics in Nigeria’s theatrical market. A handful of major chains hold significant screen count and geographic reach, giving them leverage in negotiations. Yet a title with a clear audience pull can still achieve notable earnings through alternative outlets. At the same time, the absence of one key player likely capped the film’s potential ceiling, leaving questions about what a full-platform release might have delivered.

This case adds to ongoing discussions about revenue splits, exhibition power, and how distributors and chains can align incentives for bigger titles. It also shows that fan interest in high-profile international content, especially one tied to an iconic artist, can drive cinema visits even when options are limited.

Can Michael Hit ₦500 Million or More?

At ₦323.6 million after two weekends, the question is no longer whether Michael is a success; it’s how far it can go. A useful point of comparison is Sinners (2025), which finished its Nigerian theatrical run at ₦775.8 million, one of the strongest performances by an international title in Nigeria in recent years.

Michael is tracking ahead of Sinners at every comparable stage. Whether it reaches ₦500 million will depend on how it holds in the coming weeks.

In Summary

With a solid opening weekend behind it and continued strong hold in its second weekend, Michael is positioned for a meaningful theatrical run in Nigeria and participating West African markets.
