Abeni: Webek Studios Wraps Production on First Feature Film, Directed By Esse Akwawa

The Story⚡

WEBEK Studios has completed its first feature-length film, Abeni, drawing from an oral history of a young woman’s defiance in pursuing the craft of forging amid Yoruba traditions.

Tell Me More

Directed by Esse Akwawa, who is also the CEO of WEBEK Studios, and co-directed and co-written by Samuel Olasehinde, Abeni was filmed at Africhatta Film Village in Oyo State, a location known for its focus on Yoruba representation. The story centers on Abeni, a determined young woman who challenges societal norms by entering the field of forging, a practice typically reserved for men. This narrative, inspired by a true but unrecorded historical account passed down through generations, explores themes of courage, rebellion, and resilience within Yoruba culture, blending ancestral elements with personal struggle.

Co-Executive Producers Seun Dania and Ibrahim Chatta contributed to the project’s authenticity and scope. Esse Akwawa describes Abeni as “more than a film to me, it is God’s gift to us and the resurrection of a forgotten story, one that deserves to be seen, heard, and remembered. Abeni’s journey reflects the bravery of countless African women whose histories were never written down.

Bringing this narrative to screen is our way of honoring her courage and educating the world about the sacrifices she made for her passion and especially for her family.” Ibrahim Chatta adds, “Being involved in Abeni allowed me to connect deeply with a story that mirrors the strength of our ancestors.

The film sheds light on a remarkable young woman whose love for forging pushed her beyond the boundaries of her time. It is a privilege to help bring this undocumented history into modern consciousness.” It is powered by CcHub, in partnership with Africa No Filter, and supported by the Gates Foundation, aligning with efforts to promote gender-equitable storytelling in Africa.

In Summary

As WEBEK Studios’ inaugural feature, Abeni not only marks a step forward for the Lagos-based company in producing African narratives with global standards but also preserves a piece of Yoruba heritage that highlights women’s roles in defying traditions. We await the cast reveal and distribution announcement for this film.
