The Story⚡
The much-anticipated film Freedom Way is set to premiere in cinemas across Nigeria on July 18. Here’s everything you need to know about the release.
Tell Me More
Written and produced by Blessing Uzzi, Freedom Way is a gripping action-thriller that follows Themba and Tayo, two ambitious software developers who launch a revolutionary rideshare app designed specifically for Lagos motorcyclists. But what begins as a story of innovation and triumph soon spirals into chaos as the duo confronts harsh government policies, stifling regulations, and the brutal machinery of a corrupt system. It stars Adebowale Adedayo, Bimbo Akintola, Jesse Suntele, Meg Otanwa, Femi Jacobs, Mike Afolarin, Ogranya, Teniola Aladese, Taye Arimoro, Tiwalola Adebola-Walter, and Akin Lewis.
At its core, Freedom Way delivers a powerful social commentary on police brutality, corruption, economic hardship, and political oppression, spotlighting the lived realities of everyday Nigerians. The film also marks the feature directorial debut of Afolabi Olalekan.
Freedom Way had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), screening in the Discovery section on September 7, 2024. It went on to captivate local audiences at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), where it earned the prestigious Special Jury Award. The film also made notable appearances at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, the Philadelphia Film Festival, and the 2025 New York African Film Festival, where it served as the opening night film.
The critical acclaim continued in 2025, with Freedom Way winning Best Movie and Best Writing at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
Announcing the film’s Nigerian box office release, Blessing Uzzi took to social media to share her excitement:
“Freedom Way opens nationwide on July 18, 2025. I’m doing it scared again—but this time, I’m hoping to do it with your support.”
She followed up with a heartfelt plea:
“If you’ve ever wanted to support me, this is the moment. Go see the film. Take your friends, your family, and come find out what happens on Freedom Way.”
Choice of Distributor
Given the buzz surrounding Freedom Way, many expected the film to be backed by one of Nigeria’s leading distributors—names like FilmOne, Silverbird, or Nile. However, in an unexpected turn, the film will be distributed by Genesis Cinemas.
This decision marks a daring move for Blessing Uzzi and her team. While Genesis is a respected exhibitor, the choice suggests a strategic focus, possibly aiming for more favorable revenue splits and quicker financial returns. But it’s a tough road.
One of the biggest challenges Freedom Way may face is securing adequate screen time. In Nigeria’s cinema ecosystem, major distributors often prioritize their own productions, leading to intense competition for available slots. Independent films or those outside the big distribution houses frequently struggle to gain the visibility they deserve.
With Genesis handling distribution, Freedom Way may have to navigate a crowded and politically charged cinema landscape. Still, the film’s strong festival run and critical acclaim may help it defy the odds. Whether this bold move pays off will become clear once audiences begin to show up—or not—at the box office.
Track Record of Genesis Cinemas
Uzzi’s choice to partner with Genesis Cinemas may raise eyebrows, but it is by no means an indication of Freedom Way’s potential downfall at the Nigerian box office. On the contrary, Genesis has a proven track record of successful theatrical releases, which speaks volumes about its distribution capability.
Notably, Genesis Cinemas was the distributor behind Jade Osiberu’s crime action thriller Brotherhood, which grossed an impressive ₦328.88 million during its run. The film currently ranks as the 13th highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time — a milestone to which Genesis’s strategic rollout and marketing efforts undeniably contributed.
In a similar vein, Genesis co-distributed Ayo Makun’s The Waiter alongside Silverbird Distribution. The film amassed a remarkable ₦363.60 million, further cementing the distributor’s role in steering films toward commercial success.
Given this strong portfolio, it’s clear that Freedom Way is not in uncertain hands. If history is any indication, Genesis Cinemas could very well help guide the film to box office triumph.
In Summary
With a powerful story, international acclaim, and a bold release strategy, Freedom Way has proven itself as one of the most anticipated Nigerian films of the year. Its July 18, 2025, nationwide cinema debut marks not just a release, but the beginning of a larger conversation around justice, innovation, and survival in modern-day Nigeria.
It’s more than a film—it’s a statement. Don’t miss it.
