Top Story: KOB 3 is not a Netflix title
In a surprising move, writer/director Kemi Adetiba has revealed that her latest “King of Boys” title will not receive funding from Netflix, contrary to earlier assumptions. This decision comes after Netflix announced it would no longer commission Nigerian originals.
Sources suggest the title may have been one of the originals cancelled by Netflix. Adetiba’s only surviving series from her deal is “To Kill A Monkey”, which may face limited global promotion due to budget cuts.
The Nigerian film industry’s biggest players are now back to competing at the local box office, where the glory is enticing but the financial rewards are uncertain
5 Major Business Headlines To Know
Here are the major news stories that made rounds last week.
305,000 ELJ Sold tickets so far:
Nigerian actress and producer Funke Akindele has achieved remarkable success with her latest film, selling over 305,000 tickets in just 31 days. This impressive feat positions her movie as the highest-grossing title of 2024 and potentially 2025.
The question on everyone’s mind:
Can any other A-list Nigerian celebrity replicate this success?
Is Funke Akindele’s bankable star power one-of-a-kind?
Will she be back with another blockbuster in 2025?
With numbers like these, exhibitors will undoubtedly be clamouring for her return!
Lisabi Returns, with a distribution twist:
The highly anticipated Lisabi Part 2, produced by Adedimeji Lateef and directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, is now streaming on Netflix – but only in select regions. In a surprising move, a sharing formula deal has been struck between the makers of the movie and Circuits TV, a relatively new pay-on-demand service, regarding the global rights to the series.
Interestingly, Lisabi was initially touted as a Netflix Global Original. However, Netflix’s decision to limit its release sparked an outcry among diaspora audiences who felt alienated. The new deal now makes the title accessible to these audiences, providing a much-needed solution.
This development not only expands the title’s reach but also highlights the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in content distribution.
1.5 Billion in the Bag:
According to a press release document, the N5 Billion Creative Fund, an initiative executed by the Office of the Vice President and managed by the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Digital & Creative Economy, has approved N1.5 billion for four creatives: Titi Ogufere, Williams Uchemba, Obi Emelonye, and Richard Mofe-Damijo.
The approved funds will support various projects, including Titi Ogufere’s Design Week Lagos showcase, Williams Uchemba’s production of “The Good Gift”, and Obi Emelonye’s slate of titles.
Notably, three of the creatives have withdrawn their funds to execute their film projects, while Richard Mofe-Damijo has deferred his payment to 2025 for another project. This N1.5 billion is an industry loan, not a grant, and it will be interesting to track the development and distribution of these titles to see how they utilize the funds
