Tell Me More

“At Ease”, written by Stephanie Dadet and directed by Seun Richards, is a compelling drama that follows the story of Major Agbo, a 35-year-old Nigerian Army veteran, as he battles severe PTSD after surviving a bomb blast in Northern Nigeria, leading to a downward spiral of nightmares, hallucinations, and personal loss. As he hits rock bottom, Agbo finds solace in therapy and the unwavering support of his loved ones, embarking on a transformative journey of redemption and healing.

Asa’ah Samuel, who brings Major Agbo Dooga to life in “At Ease”, reflects on the film’s profound impact: “This story is a powerful exploration of self-discovery and emotional depth. Portraying Agbo was a challenging yet rewarding experience, as I delved into the complexities of a war veteran’s psyche and the shattering of his family dynamics.”

Samuel deeply connects with the film’s themes of family and personal sacrifice, hoping it sparks introspection in audiences. “For me, the true measure of success is not if you like the characters, but if you feel something – if it resonates deep within.”

Anee Icha, who shines as Lara Agbo in “At Ease”, shares her perspective on the film’s poignant narrative: “Lara’s journey is a heart-wrenching exploration of love, sacrifice, and resilience.” As the devoted wife of a war veteran struggling with PTSD, Anee was captivated by the story’s nuanced layers, delving into the complexities of family dynamics and personal transformation.

She stresses the importance of authentic emotional portrayal, hoping the film strikes a chord with audiences. “At Ease is more than a story – it’s a reflection of life’s essence,” Icha says. “It prompts you to ask: what truly matters, and what would you sacrifice for love?”

Director Seun Richards on “At Ease”: A Personal and Emotional Journey

“Growing up in a military environment, I witnessed firsthand the unseen struggles of soldiers returning home with mental scars. With ‘At Ease’, I sought to tell the story of Major Agbo, not just as a soldier, but as a husband, father, and human being grappling with trauma in a society that often misunderstands mental health.

My goal was to illuminate the harsh reality that war continues long after the battlefield, in the minds of survivors. Through Agbo’s journey, I aimed to highlight the challenges of living with PTSD in a culture where seeking help is often stigmatized.

Visually, I employed a raw, intimate style to immerse audiences in Agbo’s world, evoking the disorientation, fear, and helplessness that accompany his trauma. This film is not just a character study but also a family drama, exploring the ripple effects of PTSD on loved ones.

Ultimately, ‘At Ease’ is a plea for empathy and understanding. It’s a story of resilience, seeking help, and the need for societal support. I hope audiences will walk away with a deeper understanding of PTSD and compassion for those affected.

This film is not a war story – it’s a human story.”
