You’ve often been cast as soft and fragile characters in the past. How did it feel to break free from that mold in your recent roles in Lakatabu, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and Tokunbo?

Breaking free from the mold of soft and fragile characters has been a transformative experience for me. In roles like those in Lakatabu, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and Tokunbo, I’ve been able to explore deeper, more complex aspects of womanhood and strength. It felt empowering to portray characters who are resilient, fierce, and unapologetically bold.

Each of these roles allowed me to showcase the multifaceted nature of women, particularly in the context of our culture and history. In Lakatabu, I was able to embody a character who navigates challenges with tenacity. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was especially significant, as I portrayed a real-life figure who was a trailblazer in the fight for women’s rights in Nigeria. It was a privilege to have played part of the Elite women and bring her story to life and honor her legacy.

Lastly in Tokunbo, I embraced the complexities of my character, showcasing vulnerability alongside strength. These roles have not only broadened my acting range but also allowed me to connect with audiences on a deeper level. I’m grateful for the opportunity to break stereotypes and portray strong, dynamic women who resonate with many. It’s a journey of growth, and I’m excited about what’s next! 

What drew you to these roles, and what do you think they reveal about your range as an actress?

What drew me to these roles was the opportunity to tell powerful stories that resonate with both personal and societal themes. Each character offered a unique perspective on women’s strength and resilience, which I am deeply passionate about. In Lakatabu, the character’s journey of overcoming obstacles and asserting her identity was something I found incredibly relatable. It allowed me to tap into a more assertive side of myself that isn’t often explored. 

With Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, it was the chance to portray a historical figure who fought for justice and equality. Her courage and determination inspired me, and I felt a responsibility to honour her legacy authentically. It was a role that required not just acting, but also a deep understanding of the historical context and the impact she had on society. 

In Tokunbo, I was drawn to the complexity of the character’s emotional landscape. She faced personal struggles while navigating societal expectations, and I loved the challenge of portraying that duality. 

These roles reveal my range as an actress by showcasing my ability to embody diverse characters who are not only strong but also deeply human. I believe that as an actress, it’s essential to challenge oneself and step outside of comfort zones, and these projects have allowed me to do just that.

They’ve pushed me to explore different facets of my artistry, and I’m excited to continue evolving in my craft. Ultimately, I hope these roles inspire others to see the strength within themselves and the stories we can tell together. 

How did you prepare for these roles’ physical and dramatic demands, and what challenges did you face?

Preparing for these roles involved a multifaceted approach, both physically and dramatically. Each character had distinct demands that required me to delve deep into their worlds. For Lakatabu, I focused on the physicality of the character, which meant understanding her environment and the challenges she faced. I engaged in workshops and discussions that helped me embody her resilience and strength. I also worked on my body language to reflect her assertiveness, which was crucial in conveying her journey authentically.

In Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the preparation was much more extensive. I researched her life because what we were taught of her was extremely limited. Her contributions to the women’s rights movement, and the historical context of her activism.

I read biographies. Dramatically, it was about capturing her spirit—her passion and determination with her friends (the Elite women) while also honouring the weight of her legacy. For Tokunbo, I faced the challenge of navigating a character with intricate emotional layers. I spent time reflecting on her internal struggles and how they manifested in her relationships.

This required a lot of introspection and emotional work, as I wanted to portray her authenticity without falling into stereotypes. Physically, I adapted my movement and voice to suit her character, which was a fun yet demanding process. Throughout this journey, one of the biggest challenges was managing the emotional weight these roles carried. Connecting deeply with these characters meant I had to be mindful of my own emotional well-being. I learned the importance of self-care and having a support system in place, especially when delving into such intense narratives.

Overall, these experiences pushed me to grow as an actress and as a person. They taught me the importance of preparation, research, and emotional resilience, and I’m grateful for the challenges that ultimately shaped my performance. 

Do you feel like these roles have allowed you to tap into a new side of yourself as an actress, and what do you hope to explore further in future projects?

Absolutely! These roles have definitely allowed me to tap into new facets of myself as an actress. Each character presented unique challenges that pushed me beyond my comfort zone, helping me discover different layers of my craft. I found strength in vulnerability, and I learned how to balance assertiveness with emotional depth, which has been incredibly rewarding.

Through Lakatabu, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and Tokunbo, I was able to explore the complexities of womanhood, resilience, and empowerment. These experiences have deepened my understanding of the characters I portray and have encouraged me to embrace a wider range of emotions and expressions.

It’s been a journey of self-discovery, and I feel more equipped to take on diverse roles that challenge societal norms and expectations. Looking ahead, I hope to explore characters that further delve into themes of identity, culture, and intersectionality. I’m particularly interested in stories that highlight underrepresented voices and narratives, whether that’s through historical figures, contemporary issues, or even fantastical roles that allow for creative expression.

I’d love to take on roles that challenge stereotypes, perhaps in genres I haven’t fully explored yet, like action or science fiction. I’m also keen on collaborating with diverse filmmakers and writers who bring fresh perspectives and innovative storytelling. Ultimately, I want to continue evolving as an actress, pushing boundaries, and telling stories that resonate with audiences on a profound level. Each project is an opportunity for growth, and I’m excited about the possibilities that lie ahead!

 How do you think your career will evolve now that you’ve demonstrated your ability to take on more diverse roles?

 I believe that demonstrating my ability to take on more diverse roles will open up new and exciting opportunities in my career. By showcasing my range as an actress, I hope to attract projects that not only challenge me but also allow me to explore different genres and character types. I feel more empowered to seek out complex characters that reflect the multifaceted nature of women today. I think there’s a growing demand for authentic representation in film and television, and I’m excited to be part of that movement.

As I continue to push boundaries, I hope to be involved in projects that not only entertain but also educate and inspire. I want to contribute to narratives that spark conversations about identity, culture, and social issues. I’m excited about the journey ahead and the new challenges that await!  Oh my! I wish I could but I really can’t go into details but know that this is Adunni Ade like you’ve never seen before. 

How do you balance the desire to take on new challenges with the pressure to stay true to your audience’s expectations?

Balancing the desire to take on new challenges while staying true to my audience’s expectations is definitely a nuanced process. I believe it’s important to listen to my audience and understand what they appreciate about my work, but I also recognize that growth often requires stepping outside of my comfort zone.

To achieve this balance, I try to incorporate new ideas gradually, ensuring that they align with my core values and the essence of what my audience loves. I also engage with my audience for feedback, which helps me gauge their reactions and adjust my approach accordingly.

Ultimately, I see it as a collaborative journey where I can innovate while still honouring the connection I’ve built with my audience. This way, I can challenge myself creatively without alienating those who have supported me along the way. 

How has working with directors like Odunlade Adekola, Bolanle Austen-Peters, and Ramsey Nouah influenced your approach to acting?

Working with directors like Odunlade Adekola, Bolanle Austen-Peters, and Ramsey Nouah has had a profound impact on my approach to acting. Each of them brings a unique vision and style to their projects, which has helped me expand my perspective and adapt my craft. 

Odunlade Adekola’s infectious energy and passion for storytelling have taught me the importance of authenticity and connecting with the audience. His ability to infuse humor and emotion into performances has inspired me to explore those elements more deeply in my own work. 

Bolanle Austen-Peters has to be one of the kindest people I have ever met. Her positive aura radiates everyday we set foot on set with her strong focus on production quality and storytelling depth. She has encouraged me to pay close attention to the nuances of character development. Her emphasis on the broader context of a narrative has made me more mindful of how my role fits into the overall story and the message we want to convey. 

Ramsey Nouah’s approach to direction emphasizes collaboration and trust within the cast. Working with him has reinforced the idea that acting is a team effort, and that open communication and mutual respect can lead to more authentic performances. 

Overall, each of these directors has contributed to my growth as an actor by challenging me to push my boundaries, embrace different styles, and remain committed to delivering compelling performances that resonate with audiences. 

What advice would you give to other actresses who may feel typecast or limited in their roles?

My advice would be to embrace your uniqueness and actively seek out opportunities that challenge those boundaries. Take the time to explore different genres and characters, even if they seem outside your comfort zone. Audition for roles that might not be the obvious choice for you; you may surprise yourself and others with your versatility. Create Your Own Opportunities.

If you’re not finding the roles you want, consider creating your own content which is what I did with SOÓLÈ. Write, produce, or collaborate with others to develop projects that showcase your talents and the types of characters you want to portray. You also have to Stay True to Yourself. While it’s important to be open to new roles, don’t lose sight of what makes you unique as an actress. Stay authentic to your passions and interests, and look for roles that resonate with who you are.

Can you discuss the nuances of your characters in Lakatabu, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and Tokunbo? How did you develop their complexities?

Each of the characters I portrayed in Lakatabu, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and Tokunbo presented unique challenges and complexities that required a deep dive into their backgrounds and motivations. Lakatabu: In this film, my character navigates a world filled with societal expectations and personal aspirations.

To develop her complexity, I focused on her internal conflicts— balancing her desires with the pressures imposed by her environment. I spent time understanding her relationships with other characters and how those dynamics influenced her decisions. This involved exploring her vulnerabilities and strengths, allowing me to portray a multi-dimensional character who resonates with the audience.

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti: Playing such an iconic historical figure alongside Kehinde Bankole, Omowunmi Dada and Bikiya Douglas was iconic for me. Though my character wasn’t the main focus of the story, being part of the story was both an honor and a challenge. Funmilayo was a fierce advocate for women’s rights and social justice, and being in close contact with her as her friend and living out each moment with her was mind-blowing!

Many times I would sit off trying to visualize her experiences in real time and I’m left with a broken heart of what life truly was in her time. This somehow helped bring Mrs Thompson’s character to life. 

Tokunbo: In this role, I explored themes of identity and belonging. Tokunbo is a character caught between different worlds, and to portray “Iya Mulika” effectively, I delved into her backstory and emotional landscape. I focused on her aspirations, fears, and relationships with Gaza. This involved embodying her moments of doubt and triumph, allowing the audience to connect with her journey on a deeper level.

I aimed to bring authenticity to each role by understanding their motivations and the societal contexts they operated within. I wanted the audience to see the character I was playing, not Adunni Ade.

How does it feel to be taking on leading roles, and do you feel a sense of responsibility to carry the story?

Taking on leading roles is both an exhilarating and humbling experience. It feels incredibly rewarding to be entrusted with the responsibility of carrying a story, as it allows me to showcase my craft and connect deeply with the audience.

I feel a sense of pride in being able to portray characters that resonate with people and reflect diverse experiences. 

 How do you think your performances in these films will resonate with a wider audience, and do you feel like you’re ready for mainstream appeal?

I believe that my performances in these films have the potential to resonate with a wider audience for several reasons. Each character I’ve portrayed embodies universal themes— struggles with identity, resilience in the face of adversity, and the complexities of human relationships.

These are experiences that many people can relate to, regardless of their background or culture. I give Authenticity and Relatability. I strive to bring authenticity to each role, allowing viewers to see themselves in the characters. I also focus on portraying the emotional complexities of my characters, which can resonate on a deeper level. Audiences often appreciate performances that evoke genuine feelings, and I aim to create moments that linger with them long after the film ends.

I’m eager to contribute to meaningful storytelling that resonates widely and inspires dialogue.

 Can you talk about any specific character traits or nuances you’re eager to explore in future roles?

Absolutely! In future roles, I’m eager to explore characters with a rich tapestry of traits and nuances that challenge traditional narratives. I would love to explore complex Morality.

I’d love to portray characters who operate in gray areas of morality. Another would be expressing Vulnerability. I want to explore how people cope with adversity while also showcasing their emotional depth. Cultural Identity is another area that interests me.

Roles that dive into the complexities of cultural identity and the struggles that come with it. Lastly would be some sort of superhero! Every time I watch “Wonder Woman” I literally go into another world with me as her. I play out different scenarios in my head. 

How do you balance playing strong, independent characters with vulnerability and relatability?

Balancing strong, independent characters with vulnerability and relatability is a nuanced process that I approach with intention and depth. Understanding the Character’s Backstory. I start by exploring the character’s background, motivations, and experiences. I try to understand the Relatable struggles of the character.

Whether it’s dealing with loss, navigating relationships, or facing societal pressures, these struggles can resonate with viewers. By portraying how the character confronts these issues, I can emphasize their strength while also making them relatable. By weaving together strength and vulnerability, I aim to create characters that are not only powerful but also deeply relatable, resonating with audiences on multiple levels.

Do you feel like you’re part of a larger movement to showcase more diverse, complex female characters in Nollywood?

Absolutely, The industry has been evolving, and there’s a growing recognition of the importance of representing women in multifaceted ways that go beyond traditional stereotypes. Increased representation, collaboration with visionary creatives, and working alongside directors, writers, and fellow actors who are passionate about telling authentic stories have been inspiring. Many creatives in Nollywood are committed to pushing boundaries and exploring new narratives that resonate with audiences. 

There is also the Audience Demand. There’s a growing appetite from audiences for richer, more diverse storytelling. Viewers are increasingly seeking content that reflects their realities and challenges societal norms.

Lastly, by breaking Stereotypes by taking on roles that defy traditional expectations, I hope to contribute to a broader conversation about the portrayal of women in film.

I want to contribute to the ongoing evolution of Nollywood. It’s a thrilling time to be involved in the industry, and I look forward to continuing to tell stories that celebrate the richness and diversity of female experiences. 

As you take on more prominent roles, do you feel like you’re becoming a major attraction for audiences, and how do you think your physical appearance, including your skin tone, has impacted your casting opportunities and overall marketability?

As I take on more prominent roles, I do feel a growing connection with audiences, and it’s incredibly gratifying to see that my work resonates with them. Being in the spotlight brings both excitement and responsibility, as I strive to represent not just myself but also the diverse stories and experiences of women, particularly in Nollywood. Regarding my physical appearance, including my skin tone, I recognize that it plays a significant role in casting.

A person’s look, colour, and body type is also put into consideration before casting which can either be in favor or otherwise. The entertainment industry, like many others, has its standards and biases, and these can influence the types of roles available to actors. However, I believe that there is a positive shift happening in Nollywood, where diversity in all its forms is being celebrated more than ever.
